A Light Reborn
by Matthew Miller

It is the year 2135 A.D.  Earth has recently suffered through a third world war and slowly struggles to recover.  The dream of space development has only just begun to be realized.  Corporations delve into space while governments lag behind.  Overshadowing all is the knowledge that the Barrier continues to hold man within the solar system.  The Barrier - apparently a sphere around the sun, beyond the Kuiper belt, it is a set distance at which man's devices stop working, mangled and destroyed.  Yet no signs of life other than man have ever been found.  Is the Barrier natural, then?

Finally, however, a ship is sent out that may be able to reach beyond the Barrier.  Where chemical rockets, sublight Heim drives, and the superluminal grav drive have all failed, a multinational research partnership has developed the first jump drive ship.  When the Discovery is destroyed after a successful jump beyond the Barrier, humanity must scramble to come to terms with and hold off a force that has waited, watching, for thousands of years.
